Oh, Deer!
Bambi and friends may be adorable until they visit your garden for dinner! Dogs may dig, cats may potty, raccoons may eat your strawberries, but deer can destroy a garden almost overnight. One of the biggest complaints I hear is about deer in the garden- primarily daylilies. While deer will eat almost anything during an especially hard winter, for the most part, they seem to avoid most herbs-especially strong smelling plants. Their least favorite to munch are members of the mint family, also lavender, sage, and rosemary. Below is a list known to be tolerant or resistant to grazing by deer. If you have plants growing in deer country, please share the likes and dislikes so we can update our list. Aconite Mayapple Alkanet Marguerite, Golden Balloon Flower Marigold Basil Mints Borage Moleplant Bugloss, Viper's Mugwort Bugle Nasturtium Calendula Onion, Welsh Candytuft Oregon Grape Catnip Pepper, Chile Chives Periwinkle Clove-pink Poppy Cohosh-Black Rhubarb Comfrey Rocket, Sweet Coreopsis Rosemary Dusty Miller Sage Foxglove Santolina Garlic Soapwort Geranium, scented Sumac, Sweet Germander Sunflower Ginkgo Tarragon Heliotrope Thyme Lady's Mantle Valerian Lamb's Ear Wormwood Larkspur Yarrow Lavender Lily of the Valley Lungwort
